What do you remember about the first time you entered a library? Why do you appreciate literature?
Having taken a moment to observe this National Library Week, I'm grateful to finally be in the profession that I love. I remember as a young child entering the New York Public Library and thinking "WOW, look at all these books." My mind raced at the thought that I could read every word, learn about all the things that could be taught to me and be a part of so many different stories created by some of the words best writers. Still today I am honored to be both a librarian and a writer, on my journey to making my dreams a reality.

Resources/references are all the books, magazines, journals, articles or sources that you use during research and while writing a paper. Citation is the quotation, or information used from the resources used to discuss the topic of research. Why do you need to cite your sources? To avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is taking someone's work and not giving the original owner/writer credit for using it. Plagiarism is serious and has several consequences. There are two styles of citations that are most used: APA (American Psychology Association) and MLA (Modern Language Association). Depending on what your teacher will require it is important to know how to do both. Check out this link for a full step by step guide to what a reference page and citations should look like. http://prezi.com/n4fx6txtpt8o/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy APA format requires the following:

What in the world would we do without our libraries? Katharine Hepburn Knowledge is fundamental to all human achievement and progress. It is both the key and the quest that advances mankind. The search for knowledge is what brought men to the moon; but it took knowledge already acquired to make it possible to get there. How we use the knowledge we gain determines our progress on earth, in space or on the moon. Your library is a storehouse for mind and spirit. Use it well.” ~ Neil Armstrong We all love to hear a good story. We save our stories in books. We save our books in libraries. Libraries are the storyhouses full of all those stories and secrets. Actor Kathy Bates I'm not comfortable being preachy, but more people need to start spending as much time in the library as they do on the basketball court. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar My encouragement to you is to go tomorrow to the library. Poet Maya Angelou Teenagers can discover the pleasures of reading and gain the power of knowledge by going to libraries. Due to the increase of technology and the ease and ability to find resources digitally most people have left the physical library and it's printed materials in the dust. However, this is a horrible thing. Often individuals use "known" sites as their first step in conducting research, not being aware that these sites don't always provide the most accurate information.
Why be misinformed? Why not use the books in the library? The reason, although most people will never admit to it, is that they are not quite sure how to use the library and it's resources. They fear that they are interrupting the librarian and don't want to ask for assistance when they don't know how to go about searching for materials. Being so stuck in the digital mind frame they aren't use to walking down isles of books searching for what they need. No need to fear, your librarian is here to help. |
