Citation is the quotation, or information used from the resources used to discuss the topic of research.
Why do you need to cite your sources? To avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is taking someone's work and not giving the original owner/writer credit for using it. Plagiarism is serious and has several consequences.
There are two styles of citations that are most used: APA (American Psychology Association) and MLA (Modern Language Association).
Depending on what your teacher will require it is important to know how to do both.

APA format requires the following:
- Author or contributors name(s) i.e. last name first, and first initial
- Date of last or latest edition
- Title of resource (article, book, publication)
- Location of publication
- Name of publisher
- Retrieved from/obtained from a website
MLA format requires the following:
- Author or contributors name(s) i.e. last name first, and first initial
- Title of resource (article, book, publication)
- Location of publication
- Name of publisher
- Date of last or latest edition
- Indication of publication type (print, website etc.)
